Why can’t you use ½” board?
½” board is not fire rated for 1 and 2 hour assemblies. It is primarily used in single-family homes where there are no fire ratings.
Then why don’t you use ½” board for non-rated walls and soffits?
We have found that it is more work to manage two different thicknesses of board on a project than it is worth. The last thing we want is to have non-rated board accidentally installed on a rated wall. Furthermore, 5/8” board is more rigid and looks better in ceiling applications, as it won’t sag as much as ½” board.
How many layers of board do I need for a 1-hour wall?
Typically, 1 layer of 5/8” type X each side of a wall will provide a 1-hour wall.
How many layers do I need for a 1-hour floor/ceiling assembly?
It depends. There are several components that make up a fire rated floor/ceiling assembly. The floor underlayment, plywood, and structural members contribute to the fire rating along with the drywall. Generally speaking, though, 2×10 dimensional lumber floor joists require a single layer of 5/8” gyp board while I-joist construction requires 2 layers of 5/8” gyp board. For more information on fire ratings and assemblies, please check out the Gypsum Association Fire Resistance Design Manual here:

What are the different levels of finish for drywall?
The Gypsum Association has published a description of the different levels of finish with a technical step-by-step on how to achieve each standard. You can find it here .
However, drywall finishes are somewhat subjective depending on lighting, paint application, texture thickness, the discerning eye, and other factors. ADCO/Grier takes great pride in providing a finished product that looks good, that we can be proud of, and that people will enjoy looking at in their homes. We provide thorough quality control and punch list services that strive to meet or exceed owner expectations for quality finishes. We will always finish one or two mockup units before moving forward with production finishing so that standards are set, adjustments can be made, and everyone agrees on the final product.
